Keeping Your Word: The True Price of Trust and Honesty

17 January 2021

How Valuable Is a Promise?

Question: If we cannot trust someone’s word, how can we build a solid relationship with them?

Sometimes we make a promise. At that moment, we believe we mean it sincerely. But when the time comes, fulfilling that promise becomes difficult.

The issue is not merely being late. When a promise goes unfulfilled, another wrong may follow: a lie.

We tell a customer we will finish the work by a certain date. The work is not ready in time. At that moment, instead of telling the truth, we begin making excuses.

We say we will attend a meeting. When we cannot make it, we say on the phone, “I’m on my way.” Yet we have not even left.

Failing to keep a promise sometimes damages not only that promise, but also a person’s connection with truthfulness.

We need to notice how a behavior we consider small spreads into other areas of life.

Honesty Can Become a Habit

Keeping one’s word is not merely something done to please others. It is also how people establish consistency within themselves.

Question: Can we show the same honesty when no one is watching?

If we know we cannot complete a task, we need to say so clearly from the beginning. A promise remains merely a beautiful sentence when no effort is made to fulfill it.

Reliability is one of the qualities people seek most in business. We think everyone is looking for the lowest price. Yet many people, particularly in important matters, prefer someone who keeps their word.

If your supplier knows you will pay your debt on time, they trust you. If your customer knows you will do the work as you say, they want to work with you.

If your spouse knows you, they look at whether you stand by your word more than at what you say.

Sometimes trust grows stronger through small promises repeatedly fulfilled, rather than lengthy explanations.

Consistency, rather than show, lies at the foundation of trust.

The Hurt Within a Person

Surah Al-A‘raf describes the removal of resentment and hurt from the hearts of the people of Paradise. This reminder also prompts us to reflect on a person’s inner world.

In this world, we sometimes cannot forget an injustice. Someone abandoning us halfway, breaking their word, or shaking our trust leaves deep marks within us.

Question: How much do we notice in our own lives the behaviors that wound us in others?

We feel upset when a promise made to us is not kept. But do we approach the promises we make to others with the same sensitivity?

People are very inclined to see themselves as right. They find an excuse for their own delay, yet regard the other person’s delay as a matter of character.

It is not easy to be fair in relationships without recognizing this contradiction.

Honesty is not merely speaking the truth. It also requires acknowledging when we have acted wrongly.

If we produce another wrong to explain our mistake, we make the problem bigger. Acknowledging our mistake, however, may be the beginning of change.

Knowing Is Not Enough; We Need to Put It into Practice

There is a difference between knowing a concept and making it part of our lives. We also see this difference when we confuse ambition with determination.

A person may work very hard to achieve success. But if they sacrifice truthfulness, their promises, and their relationships for it, how are we to evaluate that success?

We need to understand the correct concepts. Then we need to demonstrate those truths in our decisions.

Question: Is what matters to us merely reaching the outcome, or how we reach it?

People make choices in life. Every choice becomes a behavior, and every behavior has its consequences.

This is also how reliability develops. It is not a one-time claim; it is the accumulation of choices in daily life.

Today, let us recall a promise we have made. It may concern our work, family, friends, or ourselves.

How much effort are we making to fulfill that promise?

When people keep their word, they do more than complete a task; they demonstrate through their behavior that they are someone who can be trusted.
