On What Basis Do We Pronounce a Ruling?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Question: How do we know that a statement we make in the name of faith is true?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because we were taught that way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because it is often repeated?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or because we have truly investigated its basis?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verses 143 and 144 of Surah Al-An’am question prohibitions asserted concerning animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They ask whether the males, the females, or what they carry have been forbidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These questions are followed by a request for an explanation based on knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evidence people rely on when speaking in Allah’s name is brought to light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach is a powerful standard for us too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We may dislike something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We may find it incompatible with our habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We may choose not to do it in our own lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But these are not the same as saying it is religiously forbidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We cannot present our personal displeasure as Allah’s ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, we cannot declare an action right merely because we want it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our desire does not replace knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our habit does not replace evidence either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes people make this distinction for themselves and forget it for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They leave broad room for their own preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to someone else’s preference, they immediately issue definitive judgments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet a standard is not used only to limit others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It first limits our own speech and claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we are going to pronounce a ruling, we must consider its responsibility too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being able to stop where we do not know means acknowledging the value of knowledge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do not have to answer every question immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the most honest answer is saying that we do not yet know enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Old Fear, a New Tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine an elder encountering television for the first time and greeting this new device with fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a tool bringing sound and images into the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not resemble the life previously familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is unknown can easily be associated with something bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But something being new does not, by itself, show that it is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as being old does not, by itself, show that it is right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people judge an innovation without trying to understand it, they may replace knowledge with fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, we need to consider the question of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A knife can be used to cut bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same tool can also cause harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is done with a tool matters alongside what it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A phone is like this too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People can use it to reach useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can learn about a subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can communicate with someone in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they can also waste time, spread misinformation, and hurt someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carelessly placing all these uses under a single ruling makes the matter harder to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: Are we assessing what we use, or our own fear of it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This question does not ask us to accept every innovation unquestioningly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It asks that questioning be based on knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there is harm, it needs to be understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there is benefit, it should not be ignored either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of swinging between fear and praise, we can examine what is used and how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same care is necessary when speaking in the name of faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we present our generation’s habits as religion’s unchanging standard, we confuse different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, we both burden people unnecessarily and make true responsibilities harder to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is Superstition Only in the Past?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We may see ourselves as far removed from the errors of earlier people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We think we have access to more information and use more advanced tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But changes in tools do not automatically make every human thought sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even today, people may seek lucky numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may believe those who speak with certainty about the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortune-telling and similar claims may occupy too much space in our decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People are uncomfortable with uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They want to know what will happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes this desire leads them to attach themselves to someone without sound knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the words please them, they may forget to ask their basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the words frighten them, they may take them seriously because of their fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In both cases, our emotion may take the place of the claim’s truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet a claim making us feel good does not prove it true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frightening us does not prove it true either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question: When assessing a statement, do we look at its evidence, or the effect it leaves on us?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making this distinction is sometimes difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because a person’s expectation enters the words they hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may find the person predicting their desired outcome more trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may listen more attentively to an account that confirms their own thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we should be careful not only of misinformation, but also of our own selective perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeing someone else’s superstition is easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asking for the basis of a claim we believe requires greater honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith is not a reason to disengage reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not remove our responsibility, investigation, or thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the contrary, the weight of speaking in Allah’s name requires greater care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imposing Prohibitions and Removing Limits Both Require Responsibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Verse 145 of Surah Al-An’am explains prohibitions concerning certain foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carrion, flowing blood, pork, and animals slaughtered in the name of anyone other than Allah are mentioned in this context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same verse also addresses necessity together with its limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What stands out here is that the ruling is not left to people’s whims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither can unlimited prohibitions be produced from personal fears, nor can all limits be removed through personal desires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same problem appears in both directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People place their own wishes ahead of the standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person may try to relax a ruling because it is convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another may add new burdens, thinking they will appear more religious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But placing an additional prohibition on something is not automatically a more correct attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unnecessarily constricting people’s lives is also behavior with consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversely, regarding everything we want as legitimate does not create a sound standard either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What matters is not our own inclination, but our basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historical ruling concerning a particular community in verse 146 of Surah Al-An’am should also be read within its context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We cannot detach a verse from its context and turn it into a means of humiliating people today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowledge should not consist merely of sentences we select to strengthen our prejudice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We should try to understand what the text says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nor should we add to it, according to our own wishes, what it does not say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adherence to a standard also includes not adding our own ruling to it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This care is not needed only in great debates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also matters in everyday conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before telling someone close to us, \u201cThis is definitely so,\u201d we should consider what we truly know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passing on information we are unsure of in definitive language may affect another person’s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let us look not at the ease of speaking, but at the responsibility the words carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Does Our Knowledge Change in Our Lives?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We may speak a great deal about a subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We may move among fine details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if this knowledge is not reflected in our behavior at all, we face another question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are we learning all this for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do we want only to win arguments with knowledge?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or to build our lives more rightly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People’s research, work, and production are valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also need to bring what they learn together with everyday responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us consider our relationships at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us consider our behavior at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us compare the responsibilities we place on others with those we undertake ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we spend hours on a subtle debate while neglecting a clear duty, we should question our priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wanting to know every detail of a matter is understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But continually postponing a simple truth we know is also thought-provoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We know we should speak truthfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do we practice it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We know we should care for what is entrusted to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do we treat what we hold?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We know we should respect people’s rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do we truly take this into account in our decisions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The value of knowledge is not visible only in sentences we hold in memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its expression in our lives also matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving away from superstition does not mean rejecting one claim and attaching ourselves to another baseless claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means taking knowledge, thought, and responsibility more seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being more careful with words we speak in Allah’s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not placing our own wishes in the position of religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do not need to settle every debate today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we can begin asking for the basis of our own statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, instead of increasing our knowledge, we increase our feeling of certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We repeat the same claim more loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We treat the number of people agreeing with us as evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But repetition does not complete a missing basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asking where a ruling comes from is necessary to understand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This question is not disrespect toward faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is responsibly assessing the words of someone speaking in faith’s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can preserve the same care when seeing behavior outside our own preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, let us distinguish what we truly know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then let us recognize where our interpretation begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this way, we can move away from presenting an opinion as certain knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This attitude does not weaken the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It makes it more honest and understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people admit what they do not know, they make room for learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When they think they already know everything, they may try to force the knowledge they encounter into their own mold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unnecessary burdens added in religion’s name may overshadow people’s real responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While a small habit is debated, an obvious injustice may become invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While lengthy rulings are made about a tool, how it is used may not be discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let us not lose the main standard within the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us look at the basis of our claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us look at the result of our behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us consider what our learning contributes to our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let the search for knowledge and everyday responsibility not become disconnected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us try to practice the truth we know at home and at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In matters we do not know, let us not pronounce definitive judgments without investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, we can keep a more careful account of both our words and our actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
