Or is it more right simply to work and not pray?

Both may be incomplete.

People both make the concrete effort required and ask their Lord for the outcome. Through Nuh’s people in Surah Hud, the relationship between supplication, admonition, guidance, and human choices is opened to reflection.

Asking in Every State

Question: Do we ask Allah only when we are in a tight spot?

Many people do.

They pray when debt comes. They pray when ill. They pray when problems arise in marriage. They prostrate more when things go wrong.

Then the difficulty passes.

People grow stronger, find comfort, and begin to feel, “Now I can handle it myself.”

Yet need does not exist only in hardship.

People need protection in prosperity, too.

“My Lord, protect me from becoming spoiled.”

“Protect me from miserliness.”

“Protect me from using the blessing You have given in the wrong place.”

“Do not leave me to myself.”

These are supplications of prosperity.

Supplication is not merely help called for when a fire breaks out; it is remaining devoted to one’s Lord in every state.

Asking for Others, Too

Supplication is not only “Give to me.”

We can pray for our family, friends, those in need, and the reform of those on a wrong path.

When people think only of themselves, their world narrows.

When they learn to say “we,” their compassion grows.

Wishing for someone else’s well-being also reduces selfishness within.

Supplication and Effort Are Not Rivals

People may be deeply in debt.

Merely saying “I will pray and do nothing” is not right.

If they need to leave what is forbidden, they leave it. They abandon wastefulness. They are content with little. They work. They plan their debt. They do not belittle small amounts.

Likewise, saying “I will work; there is no need for supplication” is another extreme.

Question: Why do we think as though we must choose one of the two?

People both work and pray.

Concrete effort and inward turning go together.

A farmer does not merely expect a crop without plowing the soil. But neither does the farmer plow and imagine rain, blessing, and the outcome to be entirely under their control.

This balance applies to every area of life.

Guidance Is Not Given by Force

There is a very weighty truth in Nuh’s account.

People may want to advise someone. They may love them deeply. They may greatly desire their salvation.

But the other person has a choice.

A mother may explain everything to her child. One spouse may show the other what is right repeatedly. A friend may warn a friend.

It is not possible for us to make the final decision.

This does not mean giving up.

We do our best, then leave the outcome to our Lord.

Question: Are we trying to change people, or conveying what is right and leaving the outcome to Allah?

This distinction frees people from an unnecessary burden.

Not Speaking as Though What We Do Not Know Is Certain

Sometimes people make definitive judgments on matters they do not know.

They mistake their prediction for reality.

They describe their fear as though it were knowledge.

They turn their experience into a law applying to everyone.

Yet people are limited.

They know today, not tomorrow.

They see one cause, not all causes.

That is why humility is needed both when praying and when deciding.

“My Lord, if I am asking wrongly, correct me.”

“Protect me from asking for what I do not know as though it were certain.”

This awareness protects people from both arrogance and mistaken expectations.

Connecting This World with the Hereafter

People see cause and effect in this world very well.

If they work, they earn. If they learn, they develop. If they do wrong, they pay a price.

Awareness of the Hereafter also enlarges this sense of responsibility.

It reminds us that what we do today has a return.

Supplication here is not an escape from life.

On the contrary, it gives strength to choose more carefully within life.

Question: What are we asking our Lord for today, and are we making the concrete effort that desire requires?

If we want work, are we working?

If we want peace, are we correcting our speech and behavior?

If we want blessing, are we avoiding what is forbidden?

If we want forgiveness, are we accepting our mistake?

When balance is established between supplication and effort, people neither worship their own power entirely nor abandon responsibility and wait.

Saying Bismillah at the Beginning

Beginning a task by saying “Bismillah” is not merely a habit of the tongue.

People remind themselves: “I am beginning this task in my Lord’s name, not by relying on my own power.”

When beginning a meal, leaving home, starting work, or making an important decision, this remembrance diminishes the ego.

Because the reason, body, time, and opportunity people possess have also been given to them.

Question: When beginning a task, is our first thought success or right intention?

Right intention protects us even when the outcome is not as we wish.

Supplication Changes Not Only the Outcome but Also the Person

When people pray, they do not merely ask for something outside to change.

They change, too.

Someone praying about debt may recognize their wastefulness. Someone praying for their marriage may question their own speech and behavior. Someone asking for peace may first face the anger in their heart.

That is why supplication does not mean, “Let me do nothing; let the external conditions change.”

Sometimes supplication shows us the part we ourselves need to change.

Someone asking their Lord for help should not escape their own responsibility.

Not Belittling What Is Small

A small payment may seem meaningless beside a large debt.

A small step may seem worthless beside a great goal.

But life changes through small steps.

Sometimes people disregard small contributions by saying, “Five lira will not save me; five thousand lira will not save me.” The same mindset may have led them into debt or disorder.

Being content with little, valuing small things, abandoning small waste, and doing small but regular good deeds may begin a great transformation.

Question: While waiting for a great miracle, are we postponing the small right step we can take?

Giving Up the Desire to Control the Outcome

When people work, they also want to determine the outcome.

“I put in this much effort; it must turn out this way.”

But life does not always proceed as we calculate.

This does not mean the effort was wasted.

Sometimes the door we want does not open, but another opens. Sometimes we cannot change a person, but learn our own limits. Sometimes what we pray for does not come immediately, but we learn patience while waiting.

Surrender does not mean doing nothing; it means not trying to forcefully manage the outcome after acting.

When Supplication and Responsibility Come Together

Praying for honesty in a task and then lying is a contradiction.

Asking for blessing while continuing unlawful earnings is a contradiction.

Asking for peace while continually speaking hurtfully at home is a contradiction.

Asking for forgiveness while refusing to accept a mistake is a contradiction.

That is why supplication calls to action.

People take the right step they can on the path toward what they ask for.

Then they place this sentence in their heart: “I have used the means; I am not the one who determines the outcome.”

When What We Pray for Does Not Happen Immediately

People pray and want to see the outcome immediately.

They ask, “I asked; why did it not happen?”

Here the desire for control emerges again.

Supplication is not a transaction. People present their request to their Lord, but cannot determine its time and form themselves.

Question: Do we consider our supplication valuable only if the outcome we want comes?

Sometimes we learn patience while waiting.

Sometimes we recognize later that what we wanted was not suitable for us.

Sometimes the outcome comes, but not by the path we imagined.

So patience is needed alongside effort when praying.

Asking Is Not Arrogance, but Part of Servitude to Allah

Sometimes people may consider continually asking shameful.

“Allah has already given me so much; let me not ask again.”

But the issue is not merely asking for worldly things.

Asking for guidance, patience, gratitude, a right decision, and protection from the lower self’s excesses are also supplication.

In prosperity, supplication changes in this way.

While saying “Give to me” in hardship, in prosperity we can say, “Enable me to use rightly what You have given me.”

This reminds people that they need their Lord in every state.

Question: What is the smallest concrete step we can take today regarding the matter we are praying about now?

Supplication should not leave us inactive. A phone call, an apology, a small payment, a new application, or breaking a bad habit… Sometimes the step to take alongside supplication is very small, but changes the direction.

While praying, people should ask not only for the outcome they desire but also to be able to see what is right. Being able to say, “My Lord, if this desire will harm me, keep me away from it; if it is good, make it easy,” deepens surrender. Such a supplication does not deny the desire; it places Allah’s knowledge and wisdom above it.

Do your best, then leave the outcome to its Owner.

24 March 2023 Is asking Allah for everything laziness?
