Surah Al-A‘raf, Verse 55: Supplication and Knowing One’s Limits
24 January 2021
To Whom Does a Person Turn?
Question: Can we really say that we need nothing at all?
Verse 55 of Surah Al-A‘raf reminds us to pray to our Lord humbly and privately. The same verse warns us against transgressing the limits.
Supplication is a person’s recognition of their own limitations.
Where Does Transgression Begin?
Even in a matter where a person is right, they can let their anger and reaction become excessive.
A disagreement at work or a hurt within the family can draw us into an unnecessary quarrel.
Question: While seeking one of our rights, are we entitled to disregard another person?
Supplication and Conduct
A person may admit with their words that they need their Lord, then forget this in their conduct.
Cutting off contact with someone, ignoring them, or responding in anger may not solve the problem.
When we make a mistake, apologizing and choosing a new way forward is more meaningful.
What Are We Pursuing?
Useless arguments and activities we do not need can occupy our minds unnecessarily.
Question: Is the matter receiving all our attention today really our most important concern?
A person who recognizes their need may also see their limits more clearly.
